Students 'should check parental home insurance policy before getting their own'

New university students are being advised to check to see if they are already protected by their parents' home insurance cover before taking out their own, it has been reported.
Insurer Cornhill Direct has stated that in many cases existing home contents policies will extend to protect a child at university, negating the need for more insurance to be taken out.
Mark Bishop, spokesman for Cornhill Direct, commented: "We know from the insurance claims we receive from parents that the university lifestyle can leave students vulnerable to theft from their rooms."
He added that students need to be insured as they often take a lot of electrical equipment to university with them, such as mobile phones, laptops and mp3 players.
A study by the firm indicated that during a typical term, students spend an average of £102 on course equipment or books.
Direct Line recently warned that 106 bicycles are stolen from university students in the UK every day.
