Home security 'can result in lower home insurance premiums'

Security measures such as burglar alarm systems and locks can lower the amount that consumers have to pay on their home insurance premiums, the British Insurance Broker's Association (Biba) announced today.
Technical services manager for the association Graeme Trudgill stated that only certain systems are approved by different brokers meaning that in order to lower premium costs, consumers should contact their provider to see what they must do to qualify for a discount.
Mr Trudgill added that brokers may insist upon a certain level of security for homes in particular areas or that house a large amount of money or contents and also that security measures should be installed by a professional.
According to the National Security Inspectorate, some 20 per cent of house burglaries in the UK are carried out without the use of force due to lapses in security habits of homeowners, such as leaving doors or windows unlocked.
