Holiday residences 'need specialist home insurance'

Consumers who own holiday homes in the UK or abroad should be aware that such properties require specialist home insurance cover, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association.
Technical services manager Graeme Trudgill stated that due to the fact that holiday homes are often left unoccupied for an extended period of time, customers may find that they are unable to make a claim should they attempt to.
Other factors that may need to be taken into account include the reduced amount of contents that are likely to be in vacation premises due to their limited occupancy time as well as the possibility that an overseas holiday home may be in a region that the UK market has little experience of.
"You do need a specific policy [to be] properly covered - and they'll probably be better priced for you as well. Just get advice from your broker," Mr Trudgill added.
According to the most recent data by the Office for National Statistics, around 0.5 per cent of housing stock in the UK is used as holiday homes.
