Home insurance cover rethink for ex-cons, says Biba

The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) has called for Britons with previous convictions to be fairly treated when applying for financial services such as home insurance cover, it has been announced.
In partnership with charity UNLOCK, Biba has called for a more flexible attitude from insurers assessing the risk that an individual with a previous conviction may pose when providing cover in the form of services such as car or home insurance.
Eric Galbraith, chief executive at the association, commented: "The insurance industry should provide cover to as many people as possible and this requires having a more open mind when it comes to considering people with criminal records."
He added that by treating ex-offenders fairly will help the gain confidence and re-integrate into society, thus reducing the probability of them re-offending.
Earlier this year, Biba lambasted insurers for announcing increasing property premiums following the widespread floods in the UK this summer.
