"Highly unlikely" that DIY damage will be covered by home insurance

It is "highly unlikely" that home insurance providers will cover damages that result from unskilled DIY efforts, it was asserted by an industry body yesterday.
Andrew Leech, technical consultant for the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC), stated that if a consumer was to knock down a wall without ensuring that the correct supports were in place, the likelihood of a claim being accepted would not be good.
He added: "On the other hand, if you get a person in to do it for you, then he would have to have insurance to cover that sort of thing."
Mr Leech noted that in such a case, if something was to go wrong, an accident would not affect consumers' household insurance as it may be covered by the hired craftsman's professional policy.
According to Halifax, three quarters of a million Brits have damaged their property when attempting to carry out DIY projects.
