Avoid unexpected home insurance costs this Guy Fawkes' Night

While the main risk of damage to homes this November 5th is fire, there are a number of other reasons that consumers may find themselves making home insurance claims after bonfire night according to an independent financial research firm.
Defaqto notes that distressed pets left in a home may cause damage by clawing at carpets, furniture or curtains if they are unnerved by the noise of fireworks.
Also, should a fire service have to gain access to a consumer's garden if a fire becomes out of control, the fire engine may be forced to cause considerable damage to properties and gardens.
Burglary is also identified as a possible risk, as consumers may visit friends or family to celebrate the event, which can leave homes open to opportunistic thieves.
Jonathan Langstaff-Ellis, general insurance team supervisor at Defaqto, comments: "Above all, it is vital that you check that the sums insured are high enough to cover any potential loss."
The fire service advises consumers to warn the local police authority, first aid service and fire brigade if they are planning a bonfire or firework display.
