Half of UK adults fear burglary during winter

As people prepare to put clocks back an hour on October 28th, half of adults prefer not to leave the house on dark winter evening for fear of becoming victims of burglary.
Research by Abbey has indicated that burglary, which may result in the need to make costly home insurance claims, is feared by some 22.9 million householders in the UK.
Indeed, Home Office statistics indicate that the three-month period ending December 2006 was the most crime-filled quarter of the year, with some 76,4000 domestic robberies taking place.
Prasad Shastri, head of insurance marketing at Abbey, commented: "Because of the high risk associated with this time of year you should check to make sure that you are covered on your home insurance and that your policy covers you for all your possessions in the event you get burgled".
The Metropolitan police advises consumers that homes that look unoccupied and do not have adequate security are more likely to be targeted than those which are properly secured.
