Poor firework safety 'may require home insurance claims'

Almost five and a half million households are preparing to celebrate bonfire night either in their own home or at that of family or friends, but many are not safe enough, reports Churchill Home Insurance.
Some 23 per cent of householders admit to not knowing how to safely dispose of a sparkler and 21 per cent are not aware of the correct distance to stand away from a firework when lighting it.
New research by the insurer also indicates that almost one in ten (8 per cent) of British homes have been damaged as a result of fireworks going astray.
Head of home insurance at Churchill Martin Scott commented: "Personal safety and preventing potential damage to property should be at the forefront of householders minds on bonfire night."
Consumers have also been advised by the Thrifty Scot to ensure that their homes are secure around Guy Fawkes' Night as leaving houses unattended during celebrations can provide opportunities for burglars to steal items.
