'Reduce home insurance claims' by weather-proofing your house

As harsh storms and high winds are predicted in coming weeks, consumers have been advised to check that their house is protected in case of damage from the elements.
Halifax Home Insurance has stated that individuals should carry out a "winter health check" on their property, noting that some £16 million in weather-related damage was reported in 2006.
Spokesperson for the firm Vicky Emmott commented that winter is a traditional time for retreating into houses for protection from the elements and that many home insurance claims could be avoided if consumers spend some time preparing for the poor weather.
Recommendations from the company include checking boilers are serviced annually, ensuring that lofts are insulated properly and certifying that gutters and drainpipes are clear of blockages.
In recent days, home insurance provider NFU Mutual advised consumers to carry out repairs to their properties to prevent adverse weather conditions causing damage to them.
