'Extra sensible' for people in high-crime areas to keep homes secure

It makes "extra sense" for homeowners to make sure their property - if located in high-crime areas - is secure, to reduce home insurance premiums, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
Assistant director of media relations at the association Jonathan French recently stated that consumers who live in an area with a high crime rate should do the same things that someone living in another area would do to make sure homes are as secure as possible.
"It makes extra sense to secure your property properly in a high-crime area because if you have doors and window locks and if you've got a burglar alarm you are going to make your property much less likely to be targeted by either opportunist or more professional burglars," he said.
ABI figures for 2006 indicate that approximately 75 per cent of UK households have some form of home insurance for the contents of their properties and 65 per cent have buildings cover.
