'Avoid home insurance claims' with fire safety measures

Consumers are being advised to carry out checks on their properties to make sure that they are at a reduced risk of having to make a home insurance claim due to fire damage.
Data from Halifax Home Insurance indicates that the average cost of a house fire claim last year stood at £8,452 and that in the same period the insurer received nearly 3,000 such claims.
Vicky Emmott, spokesperson for the firm, comments: "We are urging all householders to spend a bit of time during Fire Safety Week checking their homes and improving fire safety measures."
Tips from Halifax on reducing fire damage risks include ensuring that chimneys are swept thoroughly by a professional, avoiding storing flammable liquids in the home and keeping internal doors closed as this slows down the progression of a house fire.
In recent days, the firm recommended that consumers should have adequate home insurance to protect their properties from firework damage over the festive period.
