Biba discusses mobile phone insurance

While it is often adequate to include a mobile phone on a home insurance policy, consumers should check to see what exactly they are getting for their money, the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) stated recently.
Peter Staddon, head of technical services at the association, commented: "Look at the alternatives as well. Don't buy at the point of sale, shop around ... Don't be hoodwinked."
He also advised consumers to see to what degree their mobile phone is protected by their home insurance as well as specific mobile phone policies as there may be exclusion clauses in the former.
Mr Staddon added that in many cases, if an individual purchases a phone, protects it and then upgrades the handset, they may not be covered as their insurance may only relate to the original handset.
A survey carried out in conjunction with the Carphone Warehouse found that over half (51 per cent) of 10-year-olds have a mobile phone and more than nine in ten (91 per cent) of 12-year-olds possess the devices.
