'Ensure home insurance covers garage contents'

Consumers have been advised to check that their home insurance policies extend to cover possessions stored in outbuildings such as garages.
Insurer Legal & General has issued the warning after noting that nearly 60 per cent of households do not use their garage to store their cars, but rather to store items that will not fit in the home.
Head of communications for the firm's general insurance business explains: "Garages and outbuildings are great for storing items but it is vital to check that house insurance provides adequate cover for your belongings."
The provider has issued a list of contents of the typical Briton's garage, which totals over £6,000 - items include DIY equipment, garden tools, barbecues, unused furniture and bicycles.
In recent weeks, the insurer noted that the role of the kitchen has also changed with 24 per cent of consumers not having traditional items such as a freezer or washing machine in the room, while 28 per cent have a television or stereo in it.
