Homeowners urged to safeguard properties

Consumers have been advised to carry out some basic steps to keep their properties safe this winter by a leading home insurance provider.
Direct Line reports that the Met Office is forecasting a far colder winter than was experienced last year and as such is urging homeowners to be prepared.
The firm states that it may be wise to have chimneys swept before lighting the first fire of the winter and to locate water valves and learn how to turn them off should a pipe burst as well as insulating water pipes with plastic or newspaper to avoid freezing.
Andrew Lowe, spokesperson for Direct Line Home Response 24, notes: "With recent mild winters, many of us may have forgotten the importance of taking the necessary precautions to protect our homes against the freezing cold."
Halifax Home Insurance recently noted that almost 18,000 weather-related claims were made last year, totalling over £16 million.
