'Half' risk home insurance claims by lagging behind pipe protection

Almost half of homeowners have no protective lagging around their water pipes, according to a new study by a leading home insurance provider.
Research by Cornhill Direct has also suggested that one in ten people take no precautions to protect their home from winter weather, such as turning off their stopcock, if they are leaving their home.
The insurer reports that the cost of burst water pipe can reach £3,500 and as such advises consumers to inspect their pipes for leaks, cracks and other damage as well as locating their stopcock to limit water damage should a burst occur.
Simon Coughlin, spokesperson for the firm, comments: "The winter weather is the biggest cause of domestic emergencies. When a cold snap bites, pipes can freeze and overworked central heating systems break down."
Householders were recently advised by the Fair Investment Company to carry out maintenance on their properties to ensure that they are increasingly energy efficient in the run-up to Christmas.
