Careless consumers 'risk Christmas home insurance claims'

Consumers may risk hefty home insurance claims over the festive period, according to new research by Direct Line.
A study by the firm suggests that 42 per cent of Brits hide all their Christmas presents in one place - in the main bedroom of the home - which could make it very easy for an opportunistic thief to ruin the big day in one fell swoop.
Head of home insurance at Direct Line Andrew Lowe comments: "Those buying popular gadgets such as digital cameras, laptops, iPods and the new iPhone need to be especially careful as these items can be easy-pickings for burglars to steal and re-sell."
Mr Lowe added that after the festive period, the value of consumers' household contents has increased considerably and as such should think about reassessing their home insurance policy.
Recent research by Lloyds TSB suggests that 59 per cent of Britons think they will overspend during the Christmas period by an average of £174 each.
