Avoid home insurance claims with property "health checks"

Consumers were advised to safeguard their properties ahead of anticipated poor weather this winter by carrying out "health checks" on their homes.
Elaine Parkes, head of general insurance technical services at Legal & General, commented: "Homeowners need to take reasonable steps to safeguard their property and contents against loss or damage."
"This includes ensuring that their property is maintained in a good condition, so fixing any loose tiles on a roof or making sure flood prevention measures are in place, if appropriate," she added.
Measures recommended by the home insurance provider include repairing dripping taps, checking that pipes are properly lagged and ensuring that loft insulation is in good condition as well as keeping important documentation in a waterproof container.
In related news, research published by Cornhill Direct in recent days indicated that almost half (43 per cent) of homeowners risk home insurance claims by having no protective lagging around their water pipes.
