Consumers have been advised to check their home insurance policies cover the increased value of their property's contents in the run-up to Christmas.
Research by insurance provider NFU suggests that a fifth (20 per cent) of individuals will spend more than £500 on presents for their loved ones as they prepare for the festive period and as such may have a number of costly items in their home.
NFU recommends that consumer inform their provider as soon as possible if they receive any high-value items as gifts so that they can be added onto a policy immediately.
Spokesperson for the firm Laura Wood explains: "People do not consider the cumulative value of the gifts which they store or bring into their home during the festive season and it is vital that they remember that the value of these presents will impact on their home contents insurance."
Home insurance provider Abbey recently noted that Scottish consumers are the most generous when it comes to spending cash over the festive period - with the average person due to spend £480 on Christmas presents this year.
