Christmas is a good time to review home insurance, according to Direct Line.
The provider notes that expensive items that may be received as gifts may need to be individually recorded to ensure that they are protected against loss or damage.
Andrew Lower, head of home insurance at the firm, adds: "Expensive items such as those over £1,500 in value, for example jewellery, may need to be specified separately on your policy - it is a good idea to check with your insurer."
He carries on to advise students to take costly items with them if they are leaving accommodation such as halls over the festive period as these are often an ideal target of burglars.
In related news, research by LV= revealed that nearly seven in ten homes (68 per cent) risk having to make a home insurance claim by leaving items such as televisions, PCs and antiques in their windows, where they could attract thieves.
