"Simple steps" can prevent festive home insurance claims

There are a number of simple ways in which homeowners can lessen the chances of having to make a home insurance claim after a burglary this Christmas, according to Liverpool Victoria.
Emma Hoyler, spokesperson for the firm, explains that if policyholders use common sense and do not leave expensive items where they can be seen from outside the property and ensure that they lock doors and windows then they may be less likely to be a thief's target.
She adds: "Don't leave ladders in unlocked sheds. If you are going out [...] maybe leave the light on inside, with curtains drawn, so that people think someone is in rather than that the property is empty."
Ms Hoyler concluded that there is "nothing worse" than coming back to a property to find it has been broken into as it is upsetting and can be time-consuming and costly to deal with.
According to the British Crime Survey, in 2005-06, around two in every 100 households were burgled.
