Ensure home insurance covers accidental damage, says Biba

Home improvement enthusiasts who botch jobs should be covered by their home insurance policy providing the policyholder has arranged accidental damage cover, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba).
Technical services officer for the association Steve Foulsham explains that such cover is often an optional extra on a policy and as such it is a question of ensuring that it is in place if consumers want such claims to be paid.
He adds that as long as consumers are acting within the law, most home insurance policies will cover the damage.
"I think there's a general perception that most people will do a certain amount of work; so most household policies would cover that damage," he concludes.
Recent research by home insurance firm Zurich, cited by the BBC, suggests that a fifth of people carry out renovation and home improvement work to a poor standard and had to pay a professional to put right their mistakes.
