A fifth 'risk home insurance by leaving home empty'

Almost one-in-five (19 per cent) homeowners may risk having to make a home insurance claim by leaving their property over the Christmas period, according to a recent study.
Recent research by Halifax Home Insurance indicates that roughly half this number intend to be absent for two weeks or longer, which may leave their home vulnerable to a burglary.
A total of 19 per cent of those planning to travel over the festive period said they did not plan to enhance their home security before they left.
Marty Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, explains that it is easy to forget matters such as property security around the busy Christmas period.
"However, we all know there are criminals who see this time of the year as providing them with rich pickings. We are urging householders, especially those who plan to go away on holiday, to take measures to safeguard their home," he adds.
In related news, home insurance provider RIAS recently stated that Christmas is an opportune time to check the extent to which a policy provides protection.
