Winter an "ideal time" to improve home security

Winter was today identified by Halifax Home Insurance as an opportune time to improve the security of a property.

Due to increasingly dark nights and the number of expensive Christmas gifts in people's homes, David Rochester, head of underwriting at the firm, explained that properties that are easy to get into are more likely to be targeted by thieves.

"Winter is an ideal time to consider making improvements to home security," he said.

Mr Rochester added that making such security measures obvious, such as fitting visible key-operated locks to windows and installing a burglar alarm in a prominent position, can help to deter potential burglars.

He concluded that security lights can also act as a deterrent and a "warning signal" to those in the house.

Recent research by Liverpool Victoria suggested that almost 15 million Britons may be tempting thieves by leaving expensive possessions on display in the windows of their homes, which could result in the need to make a home insurance claim.
