Brits 'intend to spend millions' in the run-up to Christmas

Britons plan to spend more on Christmas shopping this year than they did in 2006, according to new research from Sainsbury's Bank.
A study by the home insurance provider suggests that in the week before the big day, consumers intend to splash out a total of £11.85 billion.
This is a rise of £2.7 billion over the amount that research by the bank suggested was spent for the same period last year.
People living in the north-east, Humberside and Yorkshire are expected to spend the most, with each adult expected to shell out £339.84.
Research suggests that 4.4 million consumers plan to spend between £501 and £1,000, while 1.4 million plan to go through more than £1,000 over the seven-day period.
With so much spending going on, it may be wise to ensure that a home insurance policy is in place to protect costly items in case of unexpected mishaps such as theft or damage.
Indeed, according to Halifax Home Insurance, some 19 per cent of homeowners may risk having to make a claim on their policy by leaving their houses unattended over the festive period.
