Home insurance responsibility 'lies with policyholders'

Many homeowners will be unprotected after the festive period is over, according to a home insurance provider.
Halifax Home Insurance warns that while many consumers extend their policy to cover a short period of time before and after Christmas, they may find themselves at risk once this period of time elapses.
As many expensive gifts for immediate family remain in the home, the provider advises policyholders to review their level of cover to ensure that 2008 starts off on the right foot, with adequate protection.
David Rochester, senior underwriter for the firm, comments: "It's vital for people without unlimited cover to remember to update their insurer with any changes to their contents value and be aware that some insurers will penalise customers who underestimate the value of their belongings."
In related news, Halifax Home Insurance recently noted that 19 per cent of homeowners plan to leave their properties empty over the yuletide period, potentially leaving themselves open to burglary and the need to make a claim on their policy.
