Decorations 'will not increase home contents premiums'

Those keen to make a display of their festive spirit by putting up Christmas decorations need not worry about an effect on their contents premium, according to Halifax Home Insurance.
David Rochester, head of underwriting at the firm, explains that while there is no effect on policies, homeowners should still take measures to minimise the risk posed by fairy lights and other adornments.
He advises consumers not to leave festive candles alight when a room is unoccupied and to place them in a sensible location that is not too close to any flammable materials such as curtains.
Mr Rochester also notes that overloading electrical plug sockets when setting up Christmas lights can also pose a fire hazard and should be avoided.
"Don't leave Christmas lights switched on when you are out of the home, or at night when going to bed," he concludes.
In related news, recent research by home insurance provider Liverpool Victoria suggests that the average home has £25,000 worth of content, which may well increase over the festive period.
