More than 50 per cent of people have never checked their security alarm, according to the results of a study by Legal & General.
The Safe as Houses study indicates that while more than 80 per cent of respondents have a smoke alarm and nearly 30 per cent have a burglar alarm, more than half of those with the security feature have yet to ensure that it is working properly.
Elaine Parkes, head of technical services for general insurance at the firm, comments: "The survey has helped us gain a better understanding of today's homeowners' security and safety concerns
She adds that it is clear that awareness of necessary security precautions must be improved in order to protect consumers from having to make a costly home insurance claim.
Meanwhile, consumers were recently advised by Fair Investment Company to make certain that their home insurance policies covers any expensive gifts they may have received over the festive period.
