Avoid home insurance claims 'by employing professionals'

Consumers wishing to take environmentally-friendly steps with home improvement may risk home insurance claims among other hazards if they do not get a qualified professional to do it for them.
Such is the opinion of the National Insulation Association (NIA), which states that professionals are more likely to be aware of problems which could arise from amateur attempts to carry out the process.
Neil Marshall, chief executive of the association, comments: "NIA members use specialist equipment to install cavity wall insulation to ensure it is distributed evenly and thus avoiding cold areas."
He adds that amateurs may accidentally obstruct gas heating or air vents in their home improvement endeavours.
According to the Energy Saving Trust, 20 per cent of all heat loss in a typical home is through poor ventilation and draughts.
It also states that, without loft insulation, homeowners could be losing up to 15 per cent of their heating outgoings through their roof.
