Cold weather 'could cause home insurance claims'

The current cold snap could cause more problems for home insurance customers than the flood which took place last summer, according to Lloyds TSB.

Factors such as shorter days and colder temperatures could make processes such as clean up and rescue more difficult and as such it is important for consumers to do as much as possible to limit any potential damage to their properties.

People in areas that are at high risk of flooding are advised to take several precautions, including tranferring easily-movable furniture upstairs, rolling up carpets and taking them to the first storey of a building and keeping valuables in a watertight container.

Managing director of Lloyds TSB Insurance Phil Loney comments: "The gloomy forecast for the week ahead means that we are having to ready ourselves for a significant uplift and are advising homeowners to do all they can to protect themselves and their home."

In related news, Legal & General called for more vigilance with regard to property security to reduce the likelihood of consumers having to make home insurance claims.
