Homeowners 'need adequate insurance'

Bad weather has prompted advice from a home insurance provider that homeowners should not neglect their policies. Steve Johnson, head of Sainsbury's Home Insurance, says that winter rain and winds and flooding during last summer have seen an increase in home insurance claims over the last three years. The cost of the summer floods alone amounted to £3 million, Sainsbury's industry data analysis revealed. Mr Johnson said: "Some home buildings policies work on a sum-insured basis rather than offering unlimited cover. "As such, people need to be careful that their home is adequately insured." He went on to assert that unlimited buildings cover was a good choice for homeowners as it gave them "greater piece of mind". Sainsbury's also said homeowners should plan ahead to improve their flood protection and damage caused by a neighbour's neglect could be claimed for on their policy. Lloyds TSB stated that the dark days and cold temperatures of winter made cleanup and rescue more difficult for homeowners.
