Listening out for flood warnings and having plenty of sandbags to hand were pieces of advice given to consumers by home insurance provider MORE TH>N in recent days.
The provider also recommends that consumers keep their insurance company's contact details close to hand and consider where their car is parked and if it is in a safe location should a flood occur.
Paul Emptage, head of loss adjusting at Royal & SunAlliance, comments: "By following these basic steps, you will be able to reduce the amount of damage to your possessions and your home."
He also advised consumers to make the most of services offered by their home insurance providers.
Other advice given by the firm includes preparing a flood pack, with items such as a torch, first aid kit, warm clothes and drinking water in it, for use in case an emergency should occur.
In light of recent poor weather, Sainsbury's Home Insurance stated lately that consumers should ensure that they have adequate cover for their property.
