More than a tenth (11 per cent) of all homes in the UK have suffered some kind of damage as a result of bad weather over the course of the past five years, according to a recent study by Abbey. The banking group and home insurance provider reports that the average cost of weather-related property damage is around £2,700 with roofs and gardens being the most commonly wrecked features of houses around the country. Around five per cent of destruction caused by the British weather relates to the inside of properties, with people in Wales and the south-west of England among those most likely to be concerned about the issue. Lloyd Wilson, head of home insurance product development for Abbey, said: "Bad weather damage is a costly inconvenience and for some people, especially in flood areas. "Our research shows that the risk of damage to our homes is an ever-increasing reality and we need to be prepared for it." Earlier this week, the Met Office issued severe weather warnings for Northern Ireland and northern parts of England as heavy rains followed by low temperatures were forecast.
