Fire woe for householders without home insurance

The majority of tenants affected by a fire in a four-storey block in Norbury had no home insurance, it has emerged.
Only three of the 12 tenants had insurance to cover their possessions that were destroyed in the blaze that occurred on Boxing Day, Your Local Guardian website reports.
The ones without home contents insurance lost everything in the fire, with Dudley Mead, Croydon council cabinet member for housing noting that the "burden falls on the council" when tenants have no money or possessions.
He told the website that the fire, which led to the building being demolished, was the biggest he had ever witnessed in Croydon.
Meanwhile, Halifax Home Insurance has urged caution in the kitchen as it emerged that there is one fire every 17 minutes in a kitchen.
The home insurance provider noted that 88 per cent of these fires are caused through appliance misuse, with the damage caused by avoidable kitchen blazes costing some £280 million a year.
