As the Met Office issues severe weather warnings for many parts of the UK, Halifax Home Insurance has issued advice to policyholders.
Senior claims manager for the financial services provider Martyn Foulds comments: "It is advisable for homeowners to take preventative steps to reduce the risk of damage to their homes and also ensure they have adequate home insurance cover in place."
He added that the average claim for storm damage is roughly £1,000.
The firm recommends regular maintenance to limit the amount of potential damage by keeping central heating to at least ten degrees C, securing potentially-hazardous objects such as garden furniture and lagging any exposed water pipes.
In related news, financial services provider Nationwide recently noted that contents and building insurance are just as important as one another, following figures which suggest that one in five homeowners do not have the latter in place to protect their property.
