Over a third of private renters (37 per cent) have no home insurance for their possessions, according to Zurich.
Research carried out by the financial services provider also suggests that a similar proportion (33 per cent) of such consumers estimate the value of their possessions to be in excess of £10,000.
A total of eight per cent of respondents stated that they believed their landlord's home insurance would protect them, while a quarter (24 per cent) do not think they are at enough risk to warrant getting cover.
Home underwriting manager for Zurich Steve Gilbert comments: "We urge all renters to take some time to investigate their position, consider their risk and see if they can really afford not to be covered."
Meanwhile, figures compiled by MoneyExpert in recent days suggest that British consumers could make significant savings on their home cover by switching their insurance provider to get the best deal possible.
