The cost of love

While Valentine's Day is just around the corner, Halifax reminds consumers that February 14th is not the only romantic date on the calendar.
Research from the financial services provider suggests that nearly one in five (19 per cent) of Brits are prepared to spend over £100 on a gift for a significant other on their anniversary.
Furthermore, jewellery remains the most popular present for men to lavish upon their partner.
The firm notes that Valentine's Day is also one of the most popular days of the year for a couple to get engaged and notes that tradition dictates that men spend at least the equivalent of a month's salary on the ring to mark their celebration.
With so much spending to mark romantic occasions, it may be advisable for consumers to contact their home insurance provider to make them aware of any particularly expensive new possessions in a property.
Meanwhile, home insurance provider Direct Line estimates that £467 million will be spent on jewellery this year.
