'Billions' in roof damage caused

More than 1.5 million roofs on British homes were broken over the past 12 months, causing £4.5 billion worth of damage, according to Halifax Home Insurance.
Senior claims manager at the financial services provider Martyn Foulds explains that immediate action is needed if homeowners wish to avoid seeing the problem made worse by water coming in through missing or damaged tiles.
He adds that keeping a home in a good state of repair is a condition of the majority of home insurance policies and can also help to protect a property from further damage.
Data from the provider suggests that the average cost of wind damage reached £2,800 last year. Mr Foulds concludes: "Homeowners without adequate buildings insurance cover risk finding a huge hole blown in their finances by the cost of repairs."
Since today is Valentine's Day, consumers may also wish to follow advice from Co-operative Insurance Society, which called on people to make sure that their policies cover any expensive gifts.
