Strong locks 'reduce chance of household insurance claim'

Strong locks can deter burglars from breaking into a property and potentially prevent homeowners having to claim on their household insurance cover, according to on reformed burglar.
Commenting on behalf of Alert Me, Michael Fraser said "opportunist" thieves look for "a weak point on a property" before deciding whether to break in or not.
Burglars will look at whether windows have locks or whether gates are broken in an attempt to gain entry, Mr Fraser explained.
"If the front of a property looks weak it doesn't mean he's going to go by the front, he'll go round the back, because usually you'll find the front is more protected than the back of the house," he remarked.
Newcastle Building Society recently reported that despite the number of people fitting burglar alarms and locks, many forget to take basic precautions.
The firm found that 11 per cent of people leave their front doors unlocked, 28 per cent leave curtains open so possessions are visible from outside and 17 per cent forget to set their burglar alarms.
Such things could mean many households become victims of burglars and have to make claims on their household insurance.
