Check home insurance before hitting the road, say experts

People embarking on a caravan holiday this summer should check that their possessions are covered by their home insurance policies, one price comparison site has advised.
According to Confused.com, while most caravans are covered by standard car insurance policies, they will only be covered on a third-party basis while they are being towed.
It is also important to check personal belongings kept in the caravan are covered for loss, damage or theft under household insurance policies, the website adds.
Simon Lamble, product director at Confused.com, says most caravan cover under car insurance policies only applies when the caravan is attached to the vehicle.
"It is a good idea to check if valuables, such as mp3 players, cameras and jewellery, are covered under home insurance policies or if it is worth taking out separate cover in order to protect such items," he advises.
The Insurance Information Institute has urged homeowners to implement measures that will make it time-consuming for a burglar to break into their homes, such as dead-bolting windows and locking doors when they go on holiday as well as ensuring they have the appropriate home insurance coverage.
