Young children are the top cause of damage leading to a claim on household insurance cover, new research has suggested.
A study from Tescocompare.com polled 2,000 UK adults and discovered 42 per cent of accidents, worth £229 million, are caused by small children, compared to the 33 per cent which are the result of grown-ups.
In addition, the nation's teenagers cause approximately 250,000 more accidents, adding a further £68 million to home insurance bills.
Another 250,000 accidents were caused to the belongings of people without children - by visiting youngsters, saddling them with £68 million in household insurance costs.
Paul Baxter from the website added: "What is worrying is that over four in ten of us don't cover ourselves for accidents in the home - leaving us at risk of being seriously out of pocket."
Last week, the Strabane Chronicle recommended homeowners shop around for the best household insurance cover to avoid uncompetitive deals from their mortgage provider.
