The fact that there has been no real increase in the number of burglaries in the UK is no reason to neglect household insurance cover, experts have said.
Responding to the British Crime Survey, comparison website Confused.com pointed out that 729,000 burglaries still take place in the UK each year.
In a statement, the website said: "Despite the fact that 2.4 per cent of households still experience one or more burglaries every year, home contents insurance is not a legal requirement.
"However, it should be considered an absolute necessity."
A poll by the firm discovered homes without security measures are ten times more likely to be the victim of burglary than ones which employ even simple methods, while the research also found 31 per cent of UK homes does not have a burglar alarm.
Last week, reformed burglar Michael Fraser revealed opportunist thieves look to target properties without security measures and focus on "weak points" when breaking in.
