Almost six million UK homeowners have been involved in self-inflicted DIY accidents, which could see them make a claim on their household insurance cover.
Research by price comparison website Confused.com discovered 5,904,000 adults had a self-inflicted DIY disaster, with ten per cent causing such a mess they had to make a home insurance claim.
It also found men are the most likely to have an accident, with 20 per cent causing a mishaps compared to eight per cent of women.
However, when women did make a mess of the job, the results were worse - with the average female-caused home insurance claim costing £758.58, while men's came to £556.36.
Simon Lamble, product director at Confused.com, commented: "With a whopping six million people having confessed to DIY disasters and more than half a million having to claim on their home insurance as a result, it is important to remain savvy at all times."
Earlier this year, figures from Halifax suggested 594,960 Britons had their properties damaged by their neighbours' DIY projects, leading to £173 million in household insurance claims.
