'Expect an increase in burglary' - Home insurance

A surge in the number of burglaries inflicted on UK homeowners could spring from the credit crunch, it has been reported.
Sources at the Home Office told the Daily Mirror that they expect to see an increase in the number of burglaries when the next batch of crime statistics are published, which may be of concern to those without household insurance cover.
The insider suggested the ongoing credit crunch could be the cause of this, telling the newspaper: "It's recognised economic downturns are often linked to rises in crimes such as burglary."
At the same time, sales of products which improve home security are increasing.
The newspaper reveals there has been a 30 per cent increase in burglar alarm sales, while widow latches have increased by 32 per cent and mortice locks by 26 per cent.
John Mewett, from hardware firm Screwfix, said the figures show homeowners are "battening down the hatches".
Yesterday (July 29th), Avon and Somerset police advised household insurance holders in the area to be wary of 'walk-in burglaries' during the summer months.
