Young people 'risk home insurance claim' - Household insurance cover

New research has shown that 17 per cent of people at university age do not have household insurance cover and act in ways which could make be the victim of a burglary.
The study, which was carried out by Newcastle Building Society, found 42 per cent of 18 to 24 year olds have left their home with curtains or blinds open, allowing their possessions to be seen, while 23 per cent do not set the burglar alarm.
In addition, 35 per cent have gone out without locking the windows and 18 per cent have left their home and failed to lock the door.
Wendy Lee, commercial director at Newcastle Building Society, commented: "It stands to reason that leaving your home without locking the doors or setting the alarm creates a risk for burglary but it can also affect your home contents cover should you come to claim."
Earlier this month, research from Sainsbury's suggested there could be 100 million spare sets of key circulating in the UK, with an estimated one million homeowners forgetting to collect duplicate sets after they give them to friends, family and workers.
