A Merseyside pensioner avoided a burglary and household insurance cover claim by punching an intruder to the ground, it has been reported.
James Ratcliffe, 75, landed a right hook on crowbar-carrying William Elliot after the burglar entered his house and knocked him to the kitchen floor, according to the St Helens Reporter.
The retired glassworker, from Billinge, said his main concern during the incident was protecting his bed-ridden wife.
He told the newspaper: "I had been struggling with the guy in the kitchen and he pushed me down, but then I got up and socked him one on the jaw.
"Just like Ricky Hatton - he's the man, isn't he?"
Elliot, 30 and from Newtown Road, Carlisle, was sentenced to six-and-a-half years by Liverpool crown court after admitting assault with intent to rob and dangerous driving.
In other home insurance news, the Sunderland Echo has revealed a burglar was caught using the toilet by a homeowner.
David Bray, 61, of Hudson Road, Hendon, was sentenced to nine months in jail by Durham crown court after admitting burglary, in which he stole talcum powder and an alarm clock.
