Built-in security 'better than locks' - Motorcaravan insurance

The introduction of built-in security measures to caravans has led to a decline in theft, it has been claimed.
New methods of protecting the vehicle have cut the number of vehicles stolen, according to the National Caravan Council.
When asked what products are available to help motorcaravan insurance customers protect their vehicles, a spokesperson of the council said simple measures such as wheel clamps and hitch locks may not deter a thief.
Developments in motorhome security include "more built-in security now - since the 1992 Caravan Registration Scheme - but, particularly, the immobilisers being fitted to top of the range caravans", the representative added.
According to CRP News, more than 5,000 caravans were stolen a year in 2000 - with this figure now standing at around 1,600.
One of the factors attributed to this fall is the increased access of police to the Caravan Registration and Identification System.
In addition, more information on how to adequately protect caravans has also led to an increase in security and a decrease in thefts.
