New car 'can save up to £800 a year' - Motorhome insurance

A new car combined with fuel-efficient driving techniques could result in savings to petrol costs of up to £800 per year, new research finds.
Europcar, a vehicle renting company, says buying a relatively new vehicle and adopting new driving styles could mean cost savings, in news which may interest motorhome insurance holders.
Tests of eight cars, ranging from less than a year old to ten years old, found small cars are also not necessarily more efficient.
When driven on a 125-mile circuit of the M25, the Volvo V50 D5 Geartronic, a larger vehicle, was 44 per cent more efficient than the advertised miles per gallon (MPG) figure from the Vehicle Certification Agency, meaning £800 could be saved each year.
The tests also showed the new cars were 14 per cent more fuel-efficient than the official figures, while the older vehicles only gained three per cent on the advertised MPG ratings.
Fleet director for Europcar Tim Bailey says: "Our experiment shows not only that driving the newer cars will save you money, but also that the driving style adopted plays a huge part in the fuel economy you can achieve in the real world."
Recent research from AA Personal Loans has revealed more people are considering the running costs of a car when buying a new vehicle.
