Customers should check for "Santa clause"

Customers have been warned that their Christmas presents may not be covered by standard home contents insurance.
HSBC has encouraged consumers to check their policies, stating that £23 million worth of presents may not be protected by insurance.
Consumers have been urged to check whether their policies contain a "Santa clause". Insurers such as More Than and Tesco Personal Insurance increase the claim limit on standard home contents insurance by ten per cent over the Christmas period, yet this does not occur across the board.
"Before starting your Christmas shopping, make sure your home is secure and check that your insurance policy has a 'Santa Clause' to cover all those extra gifts," said Stephen Young, head of general insurance at HSBC.
Direct Line also warns consumers to take extra care at this time of year, stating that the likelihood of home theft is at its highest around Christmas.
"Increased darkness equals increased opportunity for burglars to go about their business uninterrupted. It is important homeowners consider reviewing their security arrangements and take extra precautions to ensure a safe and happy Christmas period," said Simon Ziviani, from Direct Line Home Insurance.
