Consumers warned to protect homes against weather

Consumers are being advised to protect their homes against winter damage and thus to take extra precautions before going away on holiday.
To claim on home insurance policies, insurance firm Hiscox warns the outside of properties must be maintained to a 'reasonable standard'. With adverse weather conditions possible over the winter months, Hiscox's Kevin Kerridge warns consumers to prepare for all possible eventualities.
"Freezing temperatures, ice, snow, wind and floods can all cause severe damage to your home and property, especially if you are not prepared for them," stated Mr Kerridge.
Consumers are advised to check that policies are kept up-to-date so that possessions are insured for the correct sum and that the outside of properties is kept in good condition.
To protect pipes from freezing over in cold weather, homeowners are advised to keep heating turned on at five degrees Celsius and that all windows and doors are locked to protect against burglary.
