Home owners are being reminded to inform their insurer of any changes made to the security of their homes, as they may be able entitled to discounts on their policy as a consequence.
New research from Sainsbury's Bank Home Insurance has discovered that Britons could spend in excess of £13 billion this year securing their homes.
The research found that 63 per cent of people are concerned about the security of their home and any enhancements made to home security could lead to lower insurance premiums.
"People are increasingly concerned about protecting their homes from intruders which is resulting in greater security measures being adopted across the country," said Robert O'May, Sainsbury's Bank home insurance manager.
"This is good news in terms of reducing burglaries but we would like to remind people that increased security can also mean lower home insurance premiums."
Fitting an outside light is the most popular security measure planned by Britons, with 16 per cent of survey respondents making this a priority; 12 per sent are considering installing a burglar alarm while ten per cent plan to put new locks on doors.
